Structural Testing

Structural items are designed to static strength requirements and fatigue life targets, both of which are often substantiated by full-scale tests.

Fatigue Analysis
Fatigue Analysis is performed to verify that a component will meet the required service life. Component retirement times are derived using the Safe-Life method. Where necessary inspection programmes are derived using damage tolerance and flaw tolerant methods.

Safe Life
Component retirement times are based on full-scale fatigue tests, measured operational loads, and defined usage spectrum. Safe-Life analysis is performed using sophisticated in-house developed software. Factors are applied to ensure that the probability of failure within the required life remains below 1 in 1000.

Flaw and Damage Tolerance
These methods aim to show that manufacturing flaws and in-service damage will not lead to failure within a prescribed inspection interval. The department uses state-of-the art crack growth prediction software and component test programs to evaluate effect of flaws under fatigue loads.
